Acer AS5736Z-4427 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)
Review by Tom O. Ashwell "Claw-guy" : You get what you pay for.
Okay, first, let me say I have been programming and using computers since the mid 1970's so I have seen a lot come and go. I studied electrical engineering in college, specializing in computer design. That being said, I have often liked Acer because of their high quality to price ratio. You usually don't pay a lot for an Acer and you usually get what you pay for as the expression goes, but Acer usually delivers more that you might expect. Sorry, but not this time.
I have to say that I am somewhat disappointed with this machine. I didn't expect stereo speakers and I didn't expect a fast machine. What I did expect is a machine that can do what I want with it: Write.
The keyboard is laid-out alright but after a surprisingly short time, the joints in the fingers can get sore. That is indicative of less cushioning than they should have. Okay, it's a laptop. I can plug in an external keyboard. Fine. But, my main problem is that the keyboard seems to be wired just like an USB keyboard would be. Probably for design concerns. I haven't checked it out but the end result is the same. Sorry, I have been using keyboards since the early 1970's - started with type-writers. And no, I don't have any old habits from them because I switched to computers almost exclusively by 1980. My big problem with USB keyboards is, frankly that they cannot keep up. Ever since PCs went that route, I noticed dropped characters or words with all the letters, they were just in the wrong sequence. At first, I chalked it up to age, but after having used a friend's old desktop computer with a PS2 keyboard, I noticed those problems were not there anymore. The buffer seems to be holding keystrokes until the scan gets back to them. The misspellings are ones I never did before and never do if I use a PS2 wired keyboard. Funny, they say USB is faster, but maybe it is the software. My tests showed that I have to hold down the shift key as long as a second before it takes effect. That is very annoying to a writer. (Okay, so "autocorrect" on the WP fixes this at the beginnings fo sentences, but on people's names for example, they come out lower case....) Also, the arrow keys sometimes need to be pressed as many as 9 times (usually 2 or 3 when it happens, which is often) before they are 'noticed'. I think the software is trying to optimize the keyboard scan. So maybe they know about the problem and think that they fixed it. For the record, it still happens with external keyboards. I tried three. Same results. I have had to slow down my typing speed, and now I cannot keep up with my thoughts. Another annoyance.
This is the last computer I will buy without checking it out in person first. Perhaps I need a "Gaming" laptop to get a keyboard that is responsive. Plugging in USB keyboards does the same thing, and I got an adapter to plug in my good old IBM PS2 keyboard. Same thing. It's the machine,(probably the driver) not me.
On the plus side, it works okay for a general laptop. No bluetooth or stereo speakers, but I can live with that. It is a bit slow, but serviceable. The wifi works fine, in fact, it seems a tad more sensitive than my previous machine, so I can use signals at a greater distance that I could before.
Light, slim, with a big beautiful screen, all in all worth the money. I paid just short of $400 for this one, I should have purchased a $1,000 machine at this rate. I intend to, but not any time soon. I have far too many computers than I should. It is really tempted to go back to my old Pentium II 400 MHZ desktop machine because it never let me down in the area that matters. But I needed a portable machine to take with me. I was using a netbook running XP and that had a similar poroblem, but the arrow keys and the shift key workd fine.
One more thought: The touch pad seems to be okay, but the built-in scolling function on the right side edge is more of an annoyance than a convenience. Too many times I have wanted to move the pointer, but I managed to scroll the screen instead. I hope I can find a way to shut that feature off. Yes, I have had plenty of time to get used to it, but it is like an uneven stair - something that gets tripped over a lot.

Review by Andy Fields : It's a nice computer.
I bought this computer for my mom and she is extremely happy. I've been testing the computer for a few days and It's really fast!
The DDR3 memory really improves this computer way too much better than a DDR2.
The processor is really decent, and it's Intel (for me Intel is MUCH BETTER than AMD).
Try to get rid off of the pre-installed programs, they're really worthless.
If you are planning to buy a fast and low budget computer this is the right choice for you (:

Review by culaslucas : Excellent computer for the price!
I just bought this for my girlfriend and received it yesterday so I haven't been able to fully put it through the paces.
That being said, I am completely satisfied so far. It came with an unhealthy amount of bloatware and the HDD was partitioned into 3 sections for 'recovery' so I did a fresh install of Win7 and got rid of the BS partitions. I noticed it was much snappier after the fresh install. Acer didn't have the wireless driver on the site with the rest of the drivers but a google search lead me in the right direction.
The keyboard is great! A big selling point was the built-in keypad. The only problem with this is when you are in normal typing position (ie. not using keypad), your hands will be on the far left of the computer so if you're using it on your lap, it's a little awkward because your hands are shifted to the left side of your body. It feels a bit unnatural. The exterior is aesthetically pleasing. Mouse click buttons were a little stiff toward the middle but are fine on the far left or right - no big deal.
I was able to stream a 1080p video to my 42" TV using the HDMI port and the computer didn't struggle at all. We watched ZombieLand + another hour of just messing around on it all on battery.
Aside from the bloatware and the offset keyboard, I really have no complaints thus far. For the price, this is an amazing deal!!

Review by Mayor Bloomburger : The price is right
I bought this back when it was about $400 including shipping, so for the price, it's a miracle machine. The best feature is the HDMI out and the graphic card, which runs like a dream when connected to an HDTV - you get a real "watching TV" experience running sites like Hulu and Youtube through the HDMI, with no choppiness or color loss, and great sound.
Pros:
Light and compact
Incredible AV experience through HDMI
Doesn't over-heat
Inexpensive to replace power adapter, battery
Low price for dual-core, 64 bit Windows 7 laptop.
Cons:
Keyboard is below par
Track-pad driver is horrible. I had to install a different driver off the Acer website to fix this problem.
Screen color quality and crispness are below par.
Comes loaded with a bunch of bloat software.
Unusually slow with memory-intensive tasks, but fast for general use. A race-horse, not a work horse.
Would buy again and recommended to friends.

Review by Bronson : Great for my use
I use my laptops for personal use and they rather normally really suck. I use the great quality webcam to chat my best friend ALL THE TIME and the microphone quality is great! One thing that threw me off was the keyboard is not like a normal one. it is a flat plastic and it is not cubic, like a desktop. Yet I have a long nuber password, I could also set my password to a voice recognizable if I wanted to! Great for the price. Have not had any software problems. Also the lightweight was a great bonus. when I lifted the box I said "No the laptop is not in there" it was

Review by That guy : Great for everyday use
This computer for people who don't want to do anything special on their computer. I wouldn't recommend it to a gamer or someone who does a lot of heavy editing, but to anyone else it's perfect. Low price, fast, responsive, and just a good deal overall. I have a slight problem getting it to sync up with my mouse. I think it's something wrong with the computer itself, but I can't really be sure. At any rate, for the price this is an excellent deal.

Review by L. Myers : good product, light and slick
I purchased this laptop to be my "browsing internet on the couch" laptop. I installed Office on it, but I dont plan to do any work on it, or play games. I am not even sure if I ever will use the video camera. But, still, it is a great small compact laptop - pretty slick and lightweight. Nice keyboard layout and feel of flat keys. It does not get hot at all - even being turned on all day - which is nice, since I just hold it on my lap reclining on the couch. The wide screen makes it easier to see entire screen content without having to scroll left and right.
